Osseointegration services we offer
Through the process of osseointegration, our surgeons can permanently anchor your prosthetic in place, which offers many significant benefits.
What is osseointegration
Osseointegration involves connecting a prosthesis for your affected limb directly to the part of the bone that remains. We use a custom-made coated titanium implant that aligns with your bone.
Osseointegration can be performed on:
- Femur (thigh bone)
- Humerus (upper arm bone)
- Radius and ulna (forearm bone)
- Tibia (leg bone)
Osseointegration is a highly specialized, advanced procedure for bone-anchored prosthetics you might qualify for if you have an above-the-knee amputation. The system relies on the body’s unique ability to accept and integrate a titanium implant placed in the bone.
Benefits of an osseointegrated prosthesis
Because there is no socket, your prosthetic will always fit, attach properly and stay in place. Osseointegration prosthetics can be used if you have short residual limbs — the part of your limb left after amputation — and if you can't tolerate a traditional prosthetic.
If you've had a limb amputation due to injury, bone cancer or other disease, osseointegration might be right for you. Our orthopedic surgeons consider your needs and goals in addition to your medical assessment before recommending an amputation. After speaking with you, they might determine that you're a good fit for osseointegration after amputation.
Benefits of osseointegrated prosthetics include:
- A more natural gait
- Ability to sit more naturally
- Better stability
- Improved osseoperception, which is the ability to experience sensations through your limb
- Increased range of motion
No socket side effects like pressure sores, pain, heat, chafing and discomfort
